The No BS Way to Sell at BE
Do you currently have bags of clothes in your trunk waiting to be sold? Or maybe you just need some tips and tricks to help you finally take those bags to your local buy-sell-trade shop. Lucky for you, you’re in the right place: keep reading for the do’s and don’ts of getting the most out of your closet cleanout at Buffalo Exchange!
Know What They’re Looking For
First off, Buffalo buys based on the style of each individual piece. Generally, ther’ree looking for current styles in mind condition – similar to what you’d find in malls and your favorite online shops right now. They have to see all items in person and buy a wide variety of styles, so it never hurts to just bring it in, but here are a few at the top of their list:
- Quality basics and wardrobe staples like jeans, tees, button-downs & blouses
- Designer (ask about consignment for extra nice pieces!) & vintage
- All adult sizes, including plus!
- Handbags & purses, shoes, jewelry and other accessories
Make Sure It’s Ready to Sell
No matter the style, the best clothes are clean clothes, so bring them in after laundry day! Clean, organized clothes are easier for your Buyer to sort through, which means you’ll be in and out of the store quicker. Also, because they don’t launder clothes before they hit the sales floor, getting rid of any blemishes gives you an overall better chance of your items being accepted! To avoid tangles and wrinkles, neatly fold your clothes in a tote bag for easy transportation.
(PS: if you’re in the market for a reusable bag, Buffalo’s totes are super rad and made from 70% recycled water bottles!)
Consider Whether You’d Buy It
Remember the golden rule? “Treat others the way you’d like to be treated”? The same applies to selling clothes! Although Buffalo encourages you to bring in as much as you’d like, they can’t buy things with missing buttons, broken zippers, tears and rips or excessive wear. Before grabbing that bear hug pile of clothing and lugging it to your car, ask yourself these questions:
- Are all the fasteners (buttons, zippers, snaps, etc) fully functional?
- Are holes, rips or tears in the garment original (and intentional)?
- Is the fabric peeling, pilling, shrunken or stretched out of shape?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, consider getting crafty by up-cycling the item or donating it to animal shelters to provide beds and blankets for pets in need.
What to Do With What’s Left
No matter what, there’s a chance that not all of your items will make the cut, and that’s totally normal! Because Buffalos buys all day, everyday, they’re looking to fill their racks with the best-of-the-best. For some pieces, they already have a lot of similar pieces on the sales floor and/or there’s low shopper demand for them. If you’re unsure why an item passed on, feel free to ask your Buyer! Here are some ideas for what to do with your remaining items:
- If it’s out-of-season, you might hold onto it and try again later. Keep in mind that Buffalo starts buying for the upcoming season a few months in advance. They still might pass it on the next time, in which case it’s time to move onto the next couple of steps!
- Depending on the location, you can leave it to donate to one of several rotating local charities!
- Give it a second chance! Maybe you weren’t ready to sell that piece just yet — imagine new ways to style it and fall back in love with your existing wardrobe.
Trade is King
Cold hard cash can certainly be tempting if you’re down bad, but consider how much more value you’ll get when you take the trade, aka store credit. With trade, you receive 50% back of the selling price for each item – that’s DOUBLE the cash amount! Plus, trade never expires and can be used at any Buffalo Exchange. If you’re always adding clothes to your closet, shopping with trade = basically free clothes! That’s Buffalo Exchange math.
