Fall Closet Cleanout: What I’m Clearing Out and Selling at Buffalo Exchange

This might be controversial, but move over spring: I’m here for the fall closet cleanout. Hear me out. At this point in the year, I’ve had enough time to give the maybes lingering from my spring closet cleanout a try. If they’re still not working with the rest of my wardrobe, I know that it’s officially time to move on. It’s also a great time to turn over your closet and re-envision your personal style: unlike the sweltering heat of summer or the bitter cold of winter, fall is the sweet spot to experiment with layers, different cuts, cool fits and a wide color palette. Another plus for fall closet cleanouts? Making space (and extra cash) for all of the gifts, goodies and guests you might have over the upcoming holiday season!

Read ahead for my tips on what to clean out from your closet during this underrated time of year (and how to sell them for cool cash or store credit at Buffalo Exchange.)

The Mid-Season Switch Out

When the seasons start to change, you’ll want your cool-weather clothes to be ready to go — save yourself some time down the line and unbox those cool weather clothes now! Sometimes, you’ll realize right away that you’re just not excited about certain pieces anymore. It’s also a good time to determine what’s missing from your wardrobe rotation (like a cable-knit sweater that goes with everything, for example) and make a plan for what to pick up on your next trip to Buffalo Exchange!

Things That Just Don’t Fit

Here’s where the real fall closet cleanout begins. Autumn is a great time to check what fits, what doesn’t and what you’re just not excited to wear anymore. It can be hard to give up an item you love just because it doesn’t fit like it used to, but I like to think that these are actually the easiest items to get rid of: love yourself as you are and your ideal closet will follow!

Things I Haven’t Worn Since…?

As an admitted clothes horse, I can quickly rack up quite the collection. To keep my closet clear from clutter, I give myself a strict timeline: each piece has to be worn — and worn more than once — in its appropriate season. If I encounter something in my closet that I haven’t worn two and a half months into summer, it’s time to sell or donate. If it’s a sentimental piece, I recommend allowing yourself one or two things to memorialize an important time or event, but let the rest go on to find a new home (where they’ll actually be worn!) While Buffalo Exchange starts buying for fall during late summer, they always take the best of all seasons year-round, so there’s still a chance you’ll be able to trade them in for cash or store credit.

Things I Wore All The Time

On the flipside, there are pieces that I used to wear all the time but that just don’t suit me anymore — like people change and grow, so does personal style! At this step, I’m going through my closet for things I’ve worn to the point of boredom (but take this with a grain of salt: Buffalo buys popular styles in excellent condition, so I only sell fashionable pieces with lots of life left in them — not the ones with fabric pilling, stretched-out waist bands or that I’ve simply worn to shreds). It’s also worth noting that, if you still love something and wear it regularly, hold onto it! Circulating clothes is great, but there’s nothing more sustainable than wearing what’s already in your closet.

After the Fall (Closet Cleanout!)

When you’re ready to sell your fall closet cleanout or trade it in for a cool-weather wardrobe refresh, walk into your local Buffalo Exchange anytime with a government-issued ID like your driver’s license or passport. For all items Buffalo can buy, you’ll receive 25% back in cash or 50% back in store credit. The best part? Once your buy is complete, you’ll receive your funds on-the-spot! No appointment is needed to sell — they’re always buying and excited to see what you brought in. Trust me, your closet will thank you!
